Slavery was a big part of life back in the days. At the time there was this thing called “The Triangular Trade”. The concept was that some countries would trade each other resources, like food. But they would also sell humans. The humans would come to countries they had never seen before. In those countries they would do all kinds of hard work. Slavery was especially common in the USA. Rich people would often have slaves to work for them.

The slaves would work out in the fields or do pretty much every kind of physical work. It was a very hard environment for the slaves, they did not get much food or clothes. If the slaves did not do the work properly, they could get tortured or punished. Because of the bad environment and the awful way of living life, many slaves tried to escape from their owners. The outcome was, that many of the slaves would get caught during an escape and then get a punishment or even be killed.

Some slaves did escape though, one of the escaped slaves were Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman was born into slavery; she hated the way of life as a slave. That is why she tried to escape from slavery, as soon as she could. She luckily succeeded the escape and made a bond with the organization called the Underground Railroad. With the help of the antislavery activists. Harriet Tubman helped approximately 70 slaves, including friends and family escape. She is known as a strong woman, who fought for the African American.
