Walter Raleigh wus one of the first English settlers who came to America. He set up a colony of about 100 men on the east coast of North America. These settlers only lasted for a year before returning home and in 1587 Raleigh made a second attempt at settling a colony at Roanoke in Virginia the supply ships sent to the colony never arrived so the colony didn’t last very long.

Myles Standish was an English military officer that wus hired by the pilgrims as Military advisor for Plymouth colony. He was a passenger on Mayflower. He wus leading the administration and defense of Plymouth Colony. On February 17 1621 the Plymouth Colony militia elected him as first commander and Re-elected him again to the position that reminds him of his life.

Samoset Was the first Native American to Make contact with the pilgrims from Plymouth colony. Samoset was a subordinate chief of an Eastern Abenaki tribe that resided at that time in what is now Maine. The Abenaki spoke the Algonquian language so Samoset could communicate with the Nauset and Wampanoag people of the area. He was visiting the Wampanoag chieftain Massasoit. at March 16 1621 Samoset entered the encampment at Plymouth and spoke to the colonists. He had learned his broken English from fishermen that came to fish off Monhegan Island and knew some of ship captains by name. After spending the night with the Pilgrims he left to return with five others who brought deerskins to trade. As it was Sunday the colonists declined to trade at that time but offered them some food.
