Can a Halloween costume be a form of cultural appropriation?
It can sometimes be difficult to know the difference between cultural appropriation and
cultural appreciation. I think that we should recognize and celebrate each other's cultures
and that there are meaningful ways to show respect and love for them. However, it's
important to understand the difference between appreciating a culture and appropriating it.
The main difference between the two is that cultural appreciation seeks to learn about the
culture and honor it whereas cultural appropriation dishonors the culture where they often
represent the culture in a demeaning way. I certainly agree with the text that some costumes
are a form of cultural appropriation. The act of race-facing can be highly offensive and
contribute to spreading harmful stereotypes. Blackface is deeply disrespectful and
historically has been used to demean African culture. There are heaps of costumes worn
yearly on Halloween that make fun of deeply rooted perceptions of culture like gypsies,
geisha, black panther or other costumes that depict people of arabic descent,
Hispanic/latino, Asian, Indigenous or Native American cultures. When choosing a halloween
costume you should think about what you are choosing to wear and not try to adopt another
