Analytical essay of ‘’ Why Do We Hate Immigrants?’’ by Kevin Powell
Immigration is such a big part of society in our time, but especially in America, for example, the shooting in El Paso mentioned in the text. Kevin´s article is written with the intention of criticizing the treatment of immigrants in today’s society.
Kevin starts out in the article by describing his past, he writes that he is not an immigrant but that he can relate to the article and describes his ancestor’s history as slaves, brought from Africa to America. He mentions that back then it was a completely different time because of the zero to no rights African Americans had throughout the history of slavery in America, and the lack of freedom the African Americans were forced to live with such as.
Kevin talks about how some people came to America willingly, while others were forced. He focuses especially on the bad treatment and violence that African Americans and immigrants have faced. In one part, he says, "We have known starvation and premature deaths. We have known families being torn apart and children left without parents. We have known torture and abuse handed down from one generation to the next like a forever-stained and unwanted birthright" (s. 2 l. 11-14). Powell uses a writing trick where he repeats words to highlight the tough times African Americans and immigrants have gone through. He also makes references in his article, like when he talks about a proposed wall to keep immigrants out: "No wall and no detention center can ever stop the massive flow of human beings as they seek out what they need and want for themselves and for their children" (s. 3 l. 63-64).
