Native American Reservation
The Red Lake Reservation is a Native American Reservation located in northern Minnesota, USA. It is an interesting and culturally significant area. It is owned by the Red Lake Band of Chippewa, an Indian tribe. That’s what makes it unique among other Minnesota reservations. The reservation covers about 806,600 acres, and the total land area controlled by the Tribe, 564,426 acres, is about the size of Rhode Island.
Red Lake Nation
The Red Lake Nation has its own government and tribal council. The tribal government has full sovereignty over the reservation. The Tribe has the right to limit who can visit or live on the reservation. The tribe has its own constitution providing for elected officials representing the four reservation districts and a participating council of hereditary chiefs. The federal government is responsible for major crimes, but the tribe has jurisdiction in all other criminal matters.
Cultural Preservation
The Red Lake Nation preserves its cultural heritage, including traditional ceremonies, rituals, dances, and artwork. They hold cultural events throughout the year. The Chippewa language is an aspect of the Red Lake culture. The Tribe has worked hard to try and teach the Ojibwe language, they offer language programs and immersion schools to ensure that it continues to be spoken. The reservation also holds historical landmarks that are important to the tribe’s history and culture.
