The short story was written by Olaf Olafsson, and is found in the book ”The O’Henry Prize Stories 2008” by Laura Furman. The story takes place nowadays, and it is a story about perfect families and trust in relationships.
The family, consisting of Oskar, Marget and their six-year-old son, Jonas, likes to go to their summer cabin near the lake during the summer. Marget is a typical, perhaps a little overprotective mother. She loves her husband Oscar and her son Jonas. She can only relax when she knows for sure that Jonas is okay. She often watches him fall asleep, and then she listens to his breathing, so she can make sure that he is all right. She dreams of the perfect family, with faith, trust and love.
Jonas is six years old, and he likes to spend time with his father, especially when they are out fishing on the lake. He is like any other kid, very adventurous and he wants to dare the world. He likes to watch his neighbor Vilhelm, who often challenges nature, with speeding in circles with his white boat. Vilhelm is the neighbor of the family, and he likes to amuse himself by making tight turns on the lake. The adventurous man causes disturbance in the peaceful and idyllic holiday paradise. Jonas idolizes Vilhelm, and he wishes that his father was fun, like Vilhelm.
