In “In the Lake of the Woods,” there are several examples of foreshadowing that create suspense. First, in the story it says “Identical, which erased identity. Or it was all identity. An easy place, she thought, to lose yourself.” This is an example of foreshadowing because the author is hinting that something is going to happen to Kathy while she is on the boat such as her losing herself and end up severely hurt or killed by saying it is an easy place “to lose yourself”. This builds suspense because the readers would be intrigued to know what happens next, on whether Kathy will get lost or go home safely. Second , in the story it says “Still, it was hard to keep her mind on the boat. Hard to sustain much resolve. Overhead, a big pale sun burned without heat. The day was slowly tilting toward shadow. Her mind, too.” This is an example of foreshadowing because when the author mentioned that Kathy is starting to lose herself it is hinting that something is going to happen in the near future just like how he said in the beginning that it is an easy place to lose yourself, she is losing herself. Her losing herself like this leads the readers to think or know that something bad is going to happen such as her death. This builds suspense because if Kathy lets her mind drift off and doesn’t focus something horrible can happen such as falling into the river, and potentially dying. In conclusion, there is lots of suspense in “In the Lake of the Woods” due to foreshadowing.
