The word “litterbug” describes a person who carelessly throws litter and junk in public places, which I think is ethically wrong and a massive problem as it makes our surroundings dirty and pollutes the environment. Littering destroys the image of our beautiful country and even though everyone has a responsibility to take care of the environment, litterbugs don’t do so. It’s like they don’t understand the concept behind trash cans or the consequences of their actions. It’s as if they think that someone’s going to clean up after them or that the trash, they throw out in public will magically disappear. The effects of littering are deep and can have both economic and environmental consequences. From an economic perspective, too much litter can prevent tourism, which is bad for countries that depend on it. From an environmental perspective, litter threatens the habitats of animals and leads to pollution.

In my opinion, littering is mainly the result of laziness, so a solution to overcome this problem would be to make the law stricter. The government should heavily fine people who litter around. Another primary cause of littering is probably a lack of awareness and education about the impacts of it. Many litterbugs are probably unaware of how litter negatively impacts the environment, such as through pollution and harm to wildlife. Therefore, an effective way to fight littering is through education campaigns that raise awareness about the harmful effect of littering. That’d hopefully make litterbugs realize how big of a problem they’re creating for themselves and their surroundings. Lack of access to trash cans is likely another big factor when it comes to littering, because, in my view, people are more likely to litter when there are fewer trash cans around. This problem leads to littering in public places, as people have no other options to get rid of their waste. So, to reduce littering, it would be an optimal solution for the government to provide more trash in and outside cities. That way, litterbugs can’t make excuses for littering in public due to there being no trash cans nearby.
