Hello, Students of Leiths School of Food and Wine. My name is (name), I am an entrepreneur working on solutions against food waste. Food waste is a huge problem because of the amounts of perfectly fine food we throw away, but also the amount of bulk buying people are doing. You guys are such a big part of the solution, but also a part of the problem, but we all are, we need to improve fast. You guys are like me, we are of the younger generation, we need to find the solution. Food waste is a growing problem. The huge part of the problem is there isn’t even enough food for everybody, not even that we throw perfectly fine food away but the amounts are incredibly big. “Each year 1.3bn tonnes of food, about a third of all that is produced, is wasted, including about 45% of all fruit and vegetables, 35% of fish and seafood, 30% of cereals, 20% of dairy products and 20% of meat. Meanwhile, 795 million people suffer from severe hunger and malnutrition.” We all contribute to the problem even unconsciously, because we all throw food away, buy the more beautiful vegetables, the products with a longer expiry date and etc. The estimated value of food that is being thrown out is one trillion dollars. If we are taking that into account, you could save upwards to around 1500 dollars a year on food.
