The report up to half of world food production is wasted, narrated by Henry Ridgwell on January 14, 2013, for the news organization VOA News, covers the increasing food waste problems the world faces. The report states that every year around 2.3 million children die from starvation, yet the world has the capability to supply every human being with food, as approximately 30-50% of the food goes to waste. A part of the food goes to waste in the harvest and transportation stage, as the farmers and retailers have a limited time to get the food from the crop fields to the store shelves and because of a lack of infrastructure in certain countries. A huge part of the food is also discarded when it arrives at the stores, because of cosmetic matters, taste and other shop and consumer standards. Richard Dodd, representer of the British retail consortium clarifies that it´s not the individual store's fault, but EU marketing rules, that determines whether the food is eligible for sale or not.To meet the rising demand for food because of population growth in the future, it is vital that people cut down on food waste, but Colin Brown from the institution of mechanical engineers clarifies that it´s a positive aspect, as the only action needed, is to reduce food waste.
