In 1900 it was illegal in every state in America to get an abortion, but the laws varied state by state. After the roe v. wade case abortion was illegal in most of the states in the US. It was back in 1973 when the supreme court legalized it. In particular, the Supreme Court recognized for the first time that the constitutional right to privacy “is broad enough to encompass a woman’s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy.” Roe v. Wade protected abortion in all 50 states, making it safer and more accessible.
In 1977 The Hyde Amendment was invented. This law stopped the federal money from paying for most abortions, except when the mother’s life is at risk, or the pregnancy is caused by rape or incest. This affects people on government healthcare, like Medicaid, and is debated by those who want more access to abortion and others who support funding limits. In 2021 it was abolished.
Before that it was a national issue and a lot of women still had abortions but under dangerous circumstances performed by people who had no medical training. Back then it was not political divided between having the opinion about being prolife or prochoice, like it is nowadays. Now we most frequently see the Democratics being prochoice and the republicans being prolife.
