American gun control has changed a lot through history. In 1920 there were almost no laws on the subject, but dramatic affairs led to changes. Certain gun laws in several states were made primarily to prevent African Americans to carry weapons. The Congress of Washington reacted for the first time in 1927 to the growing amount of organized crime, which had developed with mafia-like structures in several cities.
With the introduction of a nationwide alcohol band in 1920, many gangsters achieved great influence in drug trafficking, extortion and other crimes, which was controlled with an iron fist and firearms. A prohibition of mail order sales of weapons was introduced as the first federal law on the subject.
The so called Thompson submachine, well known as Tommy gun, was one of the first machine guns, that one could carry around effortlessly. The gangsters’ use of this weapon also challenged the authorities, who in 1934 introduced new laws. Multiple types of weapons would henceforth be taxed, and the purchase of weapons with a length of less than 46 centimeter also had to be registered. The restriction was in 1968 declared unconstitutional by the US Supreme Court, and the claim was therefore deleted from the legislation.
