Smartphones have become an inseparable part of modern life, since they were invited, and they have become an unavoidable aspect of both adults' and children’s routines. While they offer educational benefits, their presence in classrooms has sparked debate due to their impact on attention spans, social skills, and mental health. Some argue for outright bans, like Denmark’s recent policy, while others believe students should learn self-regulation. Instead of banning cell phones entirely, schools should implement strict "unless permitted" policies, allowing controlled use for educational purposes while minimizing distractions.
There is no denying that smartphones disrupt concentration. Evangeline Fuentes, a rising junior at Rivers High School, admits that social media notifications constantly pull her attention away from lessons. She confesses that platforms such like Instagram and Snapchat foster unhealthy comparisons, harming self-esteem as she states: “I have Snapchat and I have Instagram, I delete periodically. I mean, I feel like every girl or even guy knows that. Ifs kind of hard to compare.” Similarly, Rasmus Meyer, head of Denmark’s Wellbeing Commission, argues that phones "colonize" educational spaces, reducing students’ ability to focus. Studies from Danish schools show that phone-free students engage more in class, interact better with peers, and develop stronger attention spans. These findings suggest that unrestricted phone use undermines learning.
