The fifth of April 2014, the news outlet BBC news aired a video called “Is your smartphone ruining your sleep?” the video is revolving around professor Richard Wiseman. Professor Wiseman is a psychologist at the University of Hertfordshire. He is behind a survey, which states that six out of ten people are getting less than seven hours sleep a night. The video begins with an explanation of the fundamentals of how much sleep is needed and introducing the problem the survey highlighted. The male host continues the conversation by asking how checking your phone before going to bed can affect the sleep. Professor Wiseman responds by explaining the two things which can happen. The first being psychological and the second being physical. He puts the most effort into explaining what physically happens, which in layman’s terms is that the blue light emitted by a phone or computer suppresses a sleep hormone called melatonin, which is essential to drifting off to sleep. The host proceeds by asking if the effect phones have on our sleep vary from person to person, but Professor Wiseman says it doesn’t because everyone follows what is called the circadian rhythm. The interview ends off with them talking about “power naps”, where Professor Wiseman reveals that it is actually a really good thing to do as long as they are between 20 minutes and 1,5 hours.
