The recent decision to ban mobile phones at my school has sparked discussion among students, parents, and teachers. The ban is strict, with phones completely forbidden on school grounds and signs posted as constant reminders. In this newsletter, I want to share my perspective on the advantages and disadvantages of this new rule.
Pros: Focus and school environment
From the perspective of the school administration, the benefits of banning mobile phones are clear. One of the main arguments for the ban is that mobile phones are a distraction. The constant sound of notifications, the temptation of social media, and the ability to text friends during class all make it difficult for students to focus on class. By removing this distraction, the school hopes to create an environment where students are more engaged in lessons and less distracted by the phones.
During my time in state school, we had to hand over our phones each morning, locking them away for the day. While it annoyed us, we accepted it as the rule. However, some students cleverly tricked the system by handing in old phones while keeping their real ones hidden, allowing them to stay connected or distracted during class. This highlights that even strict policies can be ineffective when students are determined to break the rules. This makes me wonder: if those who kept their phones could focus in class, why can’t we all?
