Everyone loves a good joke and likes to make fun of each other. However, we also have to find a balance between what's funny, and what’s hurtful and offensive. At The Oscars in 2022, Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith’s wife. This joke was aimed at her, for shaving her head because of a medical condition. Will Smith didn't find it funny and went on stage, where he slapped Chris Rock. Was Will Smith’s reaction too strong, or was he just standing up for his wife? And was Chris Rock’s joke too insensitive and harmful?
The writer and the speaker of the acceptance speech were Will Smith. The speech was mostly about him being a protective person. It was a very dramatic and emotional speech, because of the things that were said and done prior to him giving the speech.
This is evident when he says “I know, to do what we do, you gotta be able to take abuse. You gotta be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business, you gotta be able to have people disrespecting you, and you gotta smile and pretend like that’s OK.” Here he quotes that you have to be able to “Take the abuse”, he states that he has to smile and pretend that everything is okay when people disrespect him. This shows us that he doesn’t regret his action and that this was his way of stopping the abuse.
