It can be scary to throw yourself into something unknown. Especially if it also involves others that you are supposed to take care of. To travel is to throw yourself into something new. It can be anxiety-provoking to travel into a country that has a different culture and speaks a different language.

The short story Eating Sugar by Catherine Merriman is a story about a family holiday. The parents Alex and Eileen have a daughter named Suzanne. Suzanne has moved to Thailand to teach English, and Alex and Eileen have come to Thailand to spend the holidays with their daughter. The story begins with the family getting lost on a forest trail. The parents are very anxious and freak out while Suzanne tries to stay calm and figure out how to get home. After a while, four Thai men show up and offer them a ride. The Thai men speak really bad English and that makes Alex and Eileen very skeptical. Suzanne who lives in Thailand trusts the Thai men, and is not skeptical even though they are difficult to communicate with. Despite the father wanting to protect his daughter and wife, Suzanne ends up persuading her family to drive with the Thai men. On the car trip, the parents are surprised at how kind the Thai men are and how beautiful Thailand is.
