In the story ”Eating Sugar” we hear about a small family of three. The father, Alex, the mother, Eileen, and their daughter Suzanne. The parents are on vacation I Thailand where their daughter is working as an English teacher. On their vacation they go on a market and from there to a waterfall, but they miss their transport home. Trapped in the forest, the parents start to freak out a bit. Eileen is obviously afraid that they can’t come back to the city again, which is clear in this quote:

“Why should a taxi come?” Eileen argued. “It’s not on the way to anywhere. The road stops here.” (page 1, line 16-17)

The father on the other hand tries to hide his fear away. He thinks to himself that he feels the same way as Eileen, but he doesn’t show it. He believes that his wife’s anxiety suppressed his own.

Her constantly-expressed anxiety kept his own fear suppressed. (page 1, line 20)

When Eileen starts to walk around restlessly, Alex begins to think of their youth. He remembered a time where both Eileen and he himself had been experimenting with LSD. Eileen was having an anxiety fit. Then she ate some sugar to make it go away and she felt a lot better. Alex and Eileen are also “eating sugar” in this story. It starts with the beer they get from the unknown Thai men, and then when the car comes to get them they see the whole thing from a new perspective and everything is all of a sudden extremely beautiful and incredible.
