The short story "Bunking off" (2010) by Jennifer Smith is about a young boy Peter who doesn’t have the best relationship to his parents, and he smokes tobacco. His father has just left them because he wants to ‘find himself ‘ and his mother drove him crazy the morning before the day where he meets a girl named Daria. Daria is a immigrant from Iran, Daria have no clue about where her mother and father is and she wants to live in England. Daria and Peter goes on a tour guide for Daria in the south London before her appointment. Before Daria goes to the appointment he takes a picture with her. Peter wait in a long time and then suddenly he sees Alexsa coming out alone, she tells him that they will send her back to Iran and Peter gets heartbroken.
The main character in the story is Peter, he is a 16 year old boy and we find information about him here, “Besides, Peter was sixteen and was focused inwards, unaware of anyone else unless they made a direct impact on him.”(line 45-46). Peter does not come from the best environment, “Extracting a crumpled packet containing tobacco and Rizlas2 from the pocket of his 45 skinny jeans, he sat down on a low wall and began the ritual of rolling the thinnest possible fag.”(line 47-49). We hear that he is also sensitive and have feelings in the end of the story where he gets the news about Daria who needs to go back to Iran. “ "Iran?” he breathed. “Alexsa – her life could be at risk there. Surely if they knew that they wouldn't ..."(line 194-195)
