This short story evolves around Paul, a former alcoholic who has done nothing, but sprawl on the couch for the last three weeks.
One day Paul’s former girlfriend Tammy calls him about arranging a meeting between the two. Unlike previous encounters Paul mustn’t be late this time, so he leaves an hour early but as fate would have it, the train Paul is on is delayed for two hours, and when he finally arrive Tammy is gone.
This crushes all the dreams he had of a new life between him and Tammy, and sends him down into a pit of doubt and despair. When heeding back, he falls asleep on the subway and wakes up when a ticked inspector wants to see his ticked, Paul is unable to find it and starts getting very upset. Because a delayed train, earlier today, already cost him the chance to reunite with his past girlfriend, he refuses to pay the penalty fare. Paul is thrown off the train and into the hands of the police, but they find his missing ticked and have to let him go.
When Paul gets home, there is a goodbye message from Tammy. The story ends with Paul using the money he “saved” on the fine, to buy a bottle of vodka.
