Rebuilding a broken relationship can be very hard to do. This is what the main character in Mark Slouka’s short story “Crossing” from 2009 intends to do when he takes his young son out camping in the wilderness. But in his efforts to cross the emotional distance between them, he may end up killing his own son as he miscalculates the current of the river, they have to cross. Will this crossing and his own miscalculations and lack of strength bring their relationship to a fatal end?
In the short story the father is the main character. We don’t know how old the father is, but we know he have a son and he isn’t together with the mother to the son anymore, ”He sat in the driveway for a while looking at the yard… For a long time he hadn’t wanted her back, hadn’t wanted much of anything, really.” And that might mean that he know this house, and we know he is not together with the mother, “He went inside, wiping his shoes and ducking his head like a visitor.”
This action or scene hasn’t made the father happy, “he hadn’t been happy in a while”But fortunately he has his son, they spend a lot of time together. The father takes the son out on a father and son trip, they fish, they hunt and they are camping in the forest. They are increasing their relationship and they learn a lot in the forest, I think this is good for both the father and the son. The father, the main character did also this, with his father then he was young. There is not any flashback, but we hear that the father did this with his father as well.
