The film was about James Gregory and Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela was in the prison at Robben Island, when James Gregory got the command of Nelson Mandela’s unit. James Gregory must view all the prisoners’ letters, the letters may not contain policy. If it contained policy, he must cut it out of the letter. James Gregory got a better and better relationship with Nelson Mandela in the film. In the beginning he was very strict to Nelson Mandela, and would make it the worst stay in prison ever.

Nelson Mandela's wife came to visit him sometimes. Nelson Mandela and his wife talked together on a telephone, but they were only allowed to speak English, not their own language. The first time Nelson Mandela and his wife talked together, it was only a few minutes, because they didn’t spoke English. After Nelson Mandela and his wife's first conversation, James Gregory and Nelson Mandela's relationship got better.

Then it was Christmas. Nelson Mandela had a piece of chocolate, which he wanted to give his wife as a Christmas gift, and asked James Gregory to give her the piece. Although James Gregory could be very unpopular or get fired, he did it anyway. A few days later they found out that James Gregory gave Nelson Mandela's wife the piece of chocolate. James Gregory didn’t get fired but he became very unpopular on Robben Island. Eventually it became too much for James Gregory, his wife and his children, and there was also only up to the 5. Grade in the school on the island. He wanted to get away from Robben Island, and so he did. He should still check the prisoners' letters, but just from the Mainland.
