Analyse af 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower'

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a coming-of-age novel, and Charlie, our main character, matures emotionally, physically, and sexually throughout the film. Halfway through the movie, Charlie turns 16 and gets his driver's license, and these external markers of maturity also represent Charlie's internal growth. As Charlie becomes more mature, his relationship with his sister also deepens.

One of the two main themes in this movie is coming of age and is showed by all of these external markers for Charlie. He turns 16, which on its own is a big step, then he also gets his driver’s license – also a big milestone in life. At least when you’re that age, later on it probably doesn’t mean quite as much. Charlie develops though the movie, in the beginning he’s very quiet and withdrawn. Yet very observant and thoughtful, and always paying attention to everyone around him. Later on he’s much more out going, and he also have made a great deal of friends. He’s not as afraid to say what he means.

Another main theme is being an outsider. Charlie is definitely an outsider, especially in the beginning. He doesn’t have any friends, until he becomes friends with Sam and the rest of the group. He never knew how I felt to be a part of a group.
