Juventus FC is among the world's most tradition-rich clubs. The club was formed in 1897 by young students, whose intention was to create a sports club with, among other things football. Football was at the time coming to Europe, and it was natural that the flourishing industrial city Turin also had a club. There was disagreement on the name, but because the founding fathers of young age (most were under 17 years old!) they thought it was not unnatural to call the club, “Sport Club Juventus”, which means youth in Latin. The youngsters were indeed all Latin students! After a few years the name was changed to Juventus Football Club. The club was started just for fun, and these young students had no idea that they just had founded a club, which later was to become one of the world's most successful football clubs. As I said, they would just play for fun, but Juve got a really nice start and suddenly everything was much more serious.
The first President
The club's first president was Enrico Canfari. He got the team organized, and had arranged matches against some of the more experienced and talented clubs. The youth club took big steps forward, and as early as 8 years, namely in 1905 Juventus won its first Italian championship after having beaten big teams as Genoa and Milan. At that time Juventus played its home matches at D'Armi Square, were there’s still playing ball today.
