Summary: In the movie we follow Matt Buckner (played by Elijah Wood), Matt has just got expelled from Harvard, because of a boy called Jeremy van Holden, who has given Matt the guilt for some drugs at their room. Matt is therefore leaving the states, and flights to England, where he visits his sister, who lives with her husband Steve, who is an ex-hooligan, and also the starter of the hooligan-crew GSE (Green Street Elite), Steve has a brother called Pete, who now is the leader of GSE.

Steve was persuading Pete to take Matt to Upton Park - West Ham’s homefield, where they where playing against Birmingham. It was at West Ham’s homeground that Matt would, for the first time be introduced to football violence in England. After the football game, when he was walking home, he was attacked by Birmingham Casuals. In the middle of the attack Pete and the GSE saved him and then they all ended up in a fight against the rest of the Birminghams Casuals. That was when Matt for the first time was in a fight, he was helping the GSE to win against Birminghams Casuals.
