I like the poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson, especially because it is in some way very well written and everyone can understand it. To me it seems like he really thought about every single sentence in the poem, and they are all very meaningful in a simple way. A lot of the things he mention are something - I think - a lot of people would agree with.
The poem says “To win respect of intelligent people” I assume, that the time when the poem was written, it was important to be connected and talking to people with a high position, often doctors or lawyers, to show that you had status yourself. But it’s changed a lot since the 1800s, and personally I think that it’s not only important to win respect from intelligent people but everyone. Because that shows that you not only respect them, but it also gives an idea about who you are as a person.
Everybody has their own opinion about how to get success in life. But when I hear the word ‘success’ the first thing that comes into my head, is a man in a nice black suit with a tie sitting in an office. But when I really start to think about what the word means, then success can be two different things. It can be your economical and business life, which includes having a good job with a fine paycheck and to have a good and a well functioning family. Which relates a lot to my first inner vision of the word success.
