Summary:
In the start of the story, you hear about how the thirteen-year-old girl, Grace Grave meets with a serious accident on her horse, Pilgrim. They have been hit of a big truck. They survive, but have both physical and psylogical damages afterwards.
Pilgrim gets many ghastly wounds and turns to a very frightened horse, which can’t have anyone sitting on his bag. He doesn’t trust anyone anymore. Grace has to get a new leg. She is afraid to get back to riding and actually she doesn’t want to anymore.
The doctor, who has been taking care of Pilgrim after the accident, asks for Annie’s permission to kill the horse. Her name is Mrs. Dyer and she says that she has never seen a horse with damages like these. Grace struggles with the thoughts in her head and the feelings about everything after the accident. Actually she believes it would be much easier for her, if they had Pilgrim killed. She says to her mother, it’s wrong to let the horse suffer. She tries to seem careless, but deep inside her, she can feel that she is absolutely not!
