The Larder

Nicholas Royle’s short story is structured around, what at first seems to be, an ordinary couple, who both share a deep fascination with the book collection “Observer’s Books”. Together with a wood stained locked door, this book and door are key objects in the plot. The story is based on the interactions between the male character and his girlfriend, from the point of view of an internal narrator. This first person narration contributes to giving the reader insight to the main character's thoughts. No names or descriptions of the characters are given, leaving it up to the reader to progressively discover the type of people the characters are by solely observing their behaviour and actions throughout the story.
