Skotland: Landet med klaner, kilte og sækkepiber

I have chosen to tell you a little about the text – The Land of Clans, kilts, Bagpipes and Haggis. In 1707 Great Britain was formed when Scotland became closely united with England and today it has a population just over five million. Edinburg is the capital city of Scotland. It is the seventh largest city in the United Kingdom and the second largest Scottish city after Glasgow. In Scotland the people still tend to divide themselves into two distinct groups: Highlanders, in the north western part of the country, and the Lowlanders, in the south east. The Highlands is the most mountainous area whit “Ben Nevis” being the highest peak and the Lowlands is world famous for the production of their Harris Tweed cloth and single malt whisky.

But abroad Scotland is particularly for its Scottish Gaelic traditions which include folk music, the bagpipes, clans with their own characteristic tartans and the Highland Games. In Scotland they are using the English language but about 100.000 still speak the old Scottish Gaelic language, its most people from the west coast. Furthermore, many Scottish people have family names such as McDonald, MacKenzie. Mac or Mc means “the son of” to show that a person with this name belongs to a particular family or clan.
