A limestone statue with spikes sticking out of her head (l. 5-7)
A piece of petrified pussy standing in the middle of the bay (l. 2-3)
(She has a lynch fire torch in her hand (l. 13))
The statue is portrayed negatively
What is referred to by “crosses” (l. 16), “lynch fire torch” (l. 13), “kerosene” (l. 24)?
The KKK? They burned white crosses, they poured kerosene over them and ignited the kerosene with fire torches
Segregation, racial discrimination, nationalism
What is the connection between the Statue of Liberty and what happened to “Grandpa”?
Somebody – the KKK – burned “Grandpa” as described above.
^Grandpa screamed for help and freedom, and that’s what the statue is supposed to represents. But no one/nothing helps grandpa, so now the Statue of Liberty represents the ppl. from KKK to the dad, she’s just standing there in the bay with her torch, doing nothing.
What does the statue symbolize in this poem?
Suppression!
Racial discrimination/segregation!
The KKK – lynching, burning black ppl. and their supporters
^ Death
KKK members:
descendants of white European immigrants
oppressive of the black ppl. (they brought them as slaves in the beginning, now they lynch them, and what’s worse)
