Summary: “In the name of the Father” is based on a true story. A terrorist bombing have taken place in England. The IRA (Irish Republican Army) committed this crime, but the young man, Jerry Conlon, is getting accused for being apart, even one of the leaders, of the IRA. He gets arrested and is getting interrogated, and ends up confessing the terror bombing, due to that they force him into it via torture. 3 of his friends are also wrongfully imprisoned and they all soon become known as “The Guildford 4”. All four is get sentenced life time in prison, for their “terror actions”. When Jerry’s father comes to his rescue, he is imprisoned as well, which results in Jerry and his father is getting imprisoned at the same jail, as well same cell. Even when the real bomber confesses (the real bomber is imprisoned in the same prison as Jerry and his father), the authorities can’t afford to believe the truth and keep it quiet instead of admitting their mistakes. (Assholes)
Over the years Jerry’s father have got sick and ends up dying in prison. After about 15 years in imprisonment a lawyer comes to Jerry’s rescue. The lawyer believes that there are innocent people in jail, but she will be in need of finding evidence to prove their innocence. One day she finds this briefcase, containing a valid alibi that can confirm that Jerry and his 3 friends weren’t in Guildford the day of the terror bombing, thus their innocence as well. On the briefcase there was a note saying “Not the be shown to the defenses”. I.e. that the prosecutors have hidden the truth. This new evidence reopens the case and a trial takes place. All charges are getting withdrawn and Jerry’s and his 3 friends’ names are cleared. Jerry’s father’s name is still marked as “guilty”, so he fights to clear his father name, for justice and the innocent people “In the name of The (his) father”.
