The great depression in the United States began on, what is called ``Black Tuesday´´, which was the day Wall Street crashed, in October 1929. Fast the crisis spread worldwide, and was the beginning of many years with high unemployment, poverty, low profits, deflation and lost opportunities to make the economic grow. The crisis had affected almost every nation in the world. Banks, stores and factories were closed, which left millions of people jobless and homeless. A lot of people came to depend on charity from the government.
This crisis brought a loss of confidence in the economic future.
The U.S industries that suffered the most were agriculture, as we see in John Steinbecks book, `` The Grapes of Wrath´´, mining, logging, construction and automobiles.
In 1932 Franklin D. Roosevelt became president and The Great Depression ended as the nation increased their production of war materials at the start of World War 2. The increased production made jobs to jobless people, and put a lot of money back into circulation.
John Steinbecks two novellas ``Of Mice and Men´´ and ``The Grapes of Wrath´´ are based on the conditions and way of living under the U.S government and under The Great Depression. The works of John Steinbeck is often criticizing the American society, conditions and the social standards. These three aspects are often the themes in the works of John Steinbeck.
