Explain why Ellen had an affair and what attracted her to McIntyre

Explain why Howard commits murder in the end

Howard Carey lives a monotonous life with his wife Ellen. They do the same things day after day, Howard goes for work and comes home, and when Ellen comes home, she cooks. But sometimes she knocks off late from work, and then he makes something easy to eat for himself. They live in a semi detached house, in a nice neighborhood. Howard works as a deputy sub-controller of a small complaint section. And Ellen works as a secretary for a firm of solicitors. Her relationship to her boss Mr. McIntyre is very close, they are lovers. Although there are both married.

Howard tries to be perfect he doesn’t swear or talk about sex. Ellen once called him prudish because of that. He thinks the world outside his house is dirty and polluted, by people that talk about sex and swear.

Howard doesn’t show his feelings to Ellen; they don’t have any physical contact to each other. That may be the main reason; she has an affair with her boss. After Ellens death, he finds some love letters that describe, the relationship between Ellen and Mr. McIntyre. By reading the letters, he becomes aware of Ellens life outside the house. She is just as dirty as the rest of them. That’s what makes him angry, and makes him kill the girl in the white Mackintosh. I think Ellen had an affair with Mr. McIntyre, because see was missing something in her life, and she found that when she was together with her boss. Her boss loved her very much, but I don’t think she loved him all that much. If she did then she would have left Howard for him. Ellen didn’t really care that Howard didn’t show her affection, because she got it someway else. You would think Howard would regret never telling Ellen that he loved her or at least showing it by holding her in his arms some times after her death. But he didn’t even shed a tear or say anything about how he felt. That just shows how heartless and cold he is.
