Write an essay (approximately 800 words) in which you analyze and interpret the following two poems: Rupert Brooke’s The Soldier (1914) and Siegfried Sassoon’s Base Details (1918) (Both texts are included in the material on World War I). Comment on the stylistic devices of the poems such as the use of imagery, rhyme and the tone of the poem and compare the two poets’ attitudes towards World War I as expressed in their poems.
General points to consider when analyzing poetry:
Who is speaking in the poem?
Out of what situation or feeling is the person speaking?
In what tone of voice is the person speaking?
What is the person speaking about?
Does the poem tell a story or describe a feeling?
Who do you think is meant to be the recipient (modtager) of the poem?
Does the poem make use of figurative language?
Is there an overall message in the poem?
Notice that each word has been chosen carefully by the poet, which means that you should consider that words often have more than one meaning. Look them up in the dictionary even though you believe that you know what the word means.
