Amish in the United States descended from Mennonite immigrants in the 18th and 19 century in Europe lived in scattered and isolated areas of Switzerland, France, Germany and The Netherlands. They moved to America in three major immigrant waves. The first wave around 1730 settled in the newly opened land in eastern Pennsylvania called Lancaster County. The second big wave came between 1810 and 1860 and settled mainly farther west in western Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Iowa as well as in Ontario, Canada. One last minor wave came in the late 19th century and settled in the already existing communities.
