In the play “Macbeth” the main character is the Macbeth, Thane of Glamis. When we are first introduced to him, he is on his way home from a battle he has just won along with his friend Banqou. Here they meet the three weird sisters (witches). They foretell that Macbeth will become the Thane of Cawdor and king of Scotland. Soon Macbeth is intrigued by the thought of what might happen. When, after the original Thane of Cawdor was convicted for treason and executed, King Duncan appoints Macbeth Thane of Cawdor his ambitions starts growing.

Already before he gets home to tell Lady Macbeth about the news, he has thoughts of killing Duncan, but he tries to calm himself down:

“If chance will have me king, why, chance may

crown me

Without my stir.”

(act I, scene III, l. 144)

This quote gives the impression that he does not really wish to kill Duncan. He hopes that if he is truly meant to become king, he will be so, with or without him interfering.

Keeping this in mind, it later becomes clear that Macbeth is a man who is very easily influenced.

As mentioned before Macbeth is the Thane of Glamis and a general in the Scottish army. He has just won a battle against the Norwegians. It seems like he is a noble man, serving his king and country. After the witches prophecy he starts having unpleasant murderous thoughts.
