Life on an uninhabited island: a punishment for sins or a gift of fate?

This is the central question in the amazing novel Robinson Crusoe, which tells the life story of a young and impulsive Englishman that defies his parents' wishes and takes to the sea seeking adventure. He is stranded on an uninhabited island and is forced to live there for more than twenty years. The novel is written by the English writer, Daniel Defoe, and published in the year 1719.

This essay focuses on the character analysis of the protagonist of the novel, Robinson Crusoe. He appears in the novel as a middle-class guy, who lives in the city of York.

I was born in the Year 1632, in the city of York, of a good family, tho’ not of that country, my father being a foreigner of Bremen, who settled first at Hull… (p.5, ll.1-3).

His idea to become a sailor doesn’t appeal to his parents, and they are trying to convince him not to make such a huge mistake, but instead to take an education and become a lawyer. Robinson is very stubborn, full of enthusiasm, self-reliant and adventurous, that's why despite their advice to stay at home and enjoy the "middle station" in life he decides to go on a trip.
