The main subject in the text is the progress mankind has made within robotic technology. We’re told about a Japanese scientist called Orihiro Hagita’s, director of ATR Intelligent Robotics, research, and some of the experiments he has made in his work of trying to make robots more human-like. In one of Hagita’s experiments, he puts a 3-year-old girl and her mom into a room with a robot to see how the humans react to the robot, and to test the abilities of the android. The robot talks and plays with the girl for a while, and after some time, it asks her to give it a hug, and she agrees – which I find very surprising, since I’m not sure I would trust a mechanic stranger, if I were a little child. When the robot tries to talk to the mother of the little girl, the girl gets jealous, and that’s a positive thing in the scientists’ eyes, because that means that the scientists have been able to provoke human feelings upon the robot. A lot of knowledge has been attained about this subject, but there is also a lot yet to be attained, because one of the most important things that have not yet been learned for the robots is the “social intelligence” – the ability to communicate, and to emphasize with humans. A female receptionist has also been developed, which has learned over 30,000 phrases in four languages. But still, the problem of communicating successfully with humans, remain. The ability to understand gestures and signs would be a useful tool in this problem. Hagita has had another successful experience with the robots, and that was when he put in a robot to interact with kids in a school, and the children showed compassion towards the robot, since it did not have any playmates, and they were even competitive when it came to who the android talked to.
