The movie starts out with John Dunbar awakening lying on a table with two men wanting to cut his leg off so he doesn’t get ‘cold burn’ (?). The men decide to let him lay there while they’re going for a break. While they’re gone John uses the opportunity to put on his boots and he runs back to his and the other soldiers location. He takes the risk, horseback riding right into the battlefield even though he could get killed. He gets rewarded by being able to choose his own location. He can go anywhere he wants to. He chooses to go out in the middle of nowhere where the Indians live.
He is at his post trying to make himself familiar with the new surroundings. He got his supplies inside the fort and he decides to rebuild some of it. John has already been at the fort for 30 days and has still not seen any sign of civilization. There’s a wolf following him who seems very friendly. He calls it two socks because it has two white paws. Later when he is bathing some Indian guy is inspecting the fort but Dunbar scares him away before the Indian had the chance to take his horse.
