Film review on “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975)

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest makes you reconsider: life, the way we humans treat each other. But most of all, you may reconsider what really matters.

The main character, Randle Patrick McMurphy, is pretending to be mad, in hope of getting out of hard work in jail. This contributes to him ending up in a mental institution. The institution is driven by, ‘the evil’, Nurse Ratched. Nurse Ratched doesn’t find McMurphy’s jokes about mental illness, the institution or his card games funny. Nurse Ratched will do anything in her power, to make his stay at the ward uncomfortable. McMurphy is very anti-authority. He doesn’t care for Nurse Ratched or the rules at institution. An example is when he runs away with all the men, at the institution, and takes them to a fishing trip.

The themes containing are friendships, mental illness and frustration, freedom and life as social looser.

- Jack Nicholson plays the role as McMurphy. He fulfills his job as always and the character couldn’t be played by anyone else. If you compare his acting in The Shining to his acting in One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest you will see how marvelous an actor he is. - Chief Bromden is a tall, half Indian patient. Everybody believes that he’s deaf and mute. He’s not, he just choose not to speak. He and McMurphy make good friends, being the most ‘normal’ men in the institution. The Chief help McMurphy in tough situations and as well the other way around. Chief Bromden is played by Will Sampson.- Nurse Mildred Ratched is the driving force behind the injustice at the institution. Her endless irritation to the patients and most of all McMurphy can make everyone laugh. The control freak is acted by Louise Fletcher.
