This written assignment is about Mexicans illegal immigration to USA. It will first be explained why the Mexicans choose to leave their native country, for something they have only seen pictures of, by using the push-pull method. Afterwards the book “Tortilla Curtain” will be analyzed with special reference to the characterization of the main characters, symbols and central themes in the book. Parts of the analysis will be put into perspective with a Spanish text, the lyrics to the song “Frijoleres” made by the group Molotow. By using the push-pull method it is clear that the Mexicans are crossing the border because of the awful conditions of life some have to deal with in Mexico, they are crossing the border in hope of something better. They are filled up with dreams and illusions from the media about how the Americans have a perfect live which effects the Mexicans. By analyzing the book “Tortilla Curtain” this paper also focus on the Americans general view of the increasing numbers of illegal Mexican immigrants who enter their country every year. And how the Mexicans feel about their human rights being ignored. It shows that the Mexicans would like to be seen as a human just like everyone else, even though they know that they are illegal immigrants, and not just as a Mexican.
