The two teenagers are very different but also similar in some ways.John is handsome but he lies, smokes, drinks, and curses. Lorraine is not the best looking and she is very paranoid and analytical. John is a leader where Lorraine is more of a follower. The teenagers share the feeling of loneliness in their respective homes. Both teenagers also want to be something in art; John an actor, Lorraine a writer.
The “telephone marathons” were when the teenagers called random phone numbers and then had a competition to see who could keep the stranger on the line for the longest time.
Dennis and Norton are two boys from John and Lorraine’s high school. These two boys participate in the “telephone marathons”.
John and Lorraine first encounter Mr. Pignati during one of their “telephone marathons”.
The odd thing about the teen’s conversation with Mr. Pignati is that he talks to them for an extensive period of time.
During Lorraine’s phone conversation with Mr. Pignati she told him that the teens work for a charity called the L&J Fund. Mr. Pignati wants to donate to their charity and the teenagers visit his house to collect the money.
Chapters 5 & 6
John lied to Dennis and Norton about the phone call because he wanted the charity money to himself, so he could buy beer and cigarettes.
