The text it’s about how it was under the apartheid. If you were African, Coloured or Indian, you couldn’t do a lot of things like the white people could. You couldn’t vote in the elections, you couldn’t live where you wanted to, you couldn’t move around as you pleased, and you couldn’t say what you wanted to. There were really no advantages to being African, Coloured or Indian. The “black” people couldn’t even have a white boyfriend / girlfriend. And the government could force you to move, and destroy the house. There was a lot of people there tried to change the apartheid system. African, Coloured and Indian and also a few white tried to change the system. They wanted a country that was fair to all. The most famous resistance movement was ANC (African National Congress). It was a political organisation which tried to unite all the colours against the apartheid government. They had struggled against injustice since 1912. The ANC also organised strikes and demonstrations. The problem was that, the government didn’t want change. So the police began to arrest people. Then the ANC in 1961 decided to fight back at the government with weapons. They blew the factories and fought the police and the army. The children danced and sang anti-apartheid songs with the resolute of being shot down at the police. Hundreds of people were killed and thousands were put in prison. And also a lot of children were put in prison, too. And the youngest child there was in prison was 9 years old. In the 1980s, almost all the countries of the world decided not to support the apartheid government anymore. They stopped trading with South Africa and they didn’t invite the country to the Olympic Games and the Soccer World Cup. But finally, in 1991 the government surrendered. Those who were sent to prison, set free. The ANC were elected by the people to be the new government. ANC gave all South Africans equal rights no matter what their colour were.
