Apartheid Essay

1948, an unreachable connection between two different races- a certain part that has  not only destroyed the society of the country but also ruined many innocent lives. Yet,  an unforgettable thing which took place in South Africa and has existed for the last  century; which we also know it as, apartheid.     Apartheid translated to Afrikaans: apartness was a name of a chaotic event and is  another word for separateness. In other words, apartheid was the name of a policy  that separated the relation between white and black people. Although the racial  segregation already was there from the beginning, the name apartheid was first  introduced around 1948 to describe the racial segregation policies, when stuff started  to happen. The reason why the segregation policies got bigger, was because of the  support from the National Party, which was in that time the government.      The point of apartheid was, that black people would live differently or harder than  white people. It could be on the basis, could live, work, the type of education they  could receive, and whether they could vote. Not only that, but nonwhite were also  forced to live in separate areas from whites, which were outside the center of the  country, where the whites usually lived. The areas where the black people lived, were  normally called South West township or Soweto. The township was based on small  (also separated) villages with a bad economy. The villages were not separated  because of the government, but because of different tribes.     The tribes wouldn t live together, because it would be harder to take care of so many  people at once, and because they were not alike, either thinking, languages or culture.  Basically, every tribe had a different system, for example, Zulu (the biggest tribe) lived  by their own rules and worked in the mines, and Xhosa which had their own holiday  and mostly spoke English. More or less, it was hard for everybody.    Apartheid didn t end directly but slowly. It all started in 1967, when thousands of black  children in Soweto demonstrated front of armed police, because of unfairly  requirement for black students. But suddenly, the police opened fire with tear gas and  bullets with no warnings, and end up killing a few running kids. Because of the  unacceptable act, it drew more international attention. At that time apartheid was  pretty much falling apart. Under the pressure from international organizations, the  National Party government tried to suppressing some laws including the abolition of  the pass laws. In the end, the law of supporting apartheid was removed in the early  1990s, and a new constitution got adopted in 1993. And in 1994 an election for all races  happened, which resulted the end of apartheid- a black man who was an  anti-apartheid activist, Nelson Mandela. 12.Good work.
