“Eating Sugar” a British short story by Catherine Merriman, tells the story of a family holiday that brings back memories from the past. A wonderfully written story about: new experiences and acquaintances, old memories, tourism, the importance of language and responsibility.
Alex and Eileen, proud parents of brave, twenty-one-year old daughter Suzanne have come to Thailand, the country that is described in the story on page 3, line 76, as: “The land of smiles; but also of pirates, and bandits.” They have come to Thailand to spend their holiday with their daughter in the Thai New Year Holiday called “Song Khran” the only time Suzanne has time off from work. The story starts with the narrator telling us that they have wandered off, and are now lost somewhere on a forest trail. Alex, who by now is exhausted and sweating like a pig, thinks to himself while sitting down on a bench to take a rest, what an idiotic idea it was to come to Thailand in April, meanwhile his wife Eileen is restless and worried enough for both of them thinking about if they will ever get back again. Here I get a sort of stereotypical picture of the parents, which also can be related to (picture 1) Westerners, or as the Thais call them “Farangs”. Suzanne, an English teacher in Thailand, is taking the experience as a true free spirited explorer, and leaving the worrying to her parents.
