We all fear to be helpless. No one knows you, no one understands you and the ones that do, are they trustworthy? It is a matter of comforting yourself and other people or else you are in fact helpless. In “Eating Sugar” we hear about the feeling of being alone even though you have plenty of opportunities to get some help. And when the fear takes over your body you try everything to make it go away.
The short story “Eating Sugar” is about a family of three, the father Alex, the mother Eileen and their daughter Suzanne. They are on vacation in Thailand and they have been out looking at a waterfall with some Thais. Alex and his family finds the waterfall so amazing that they want to have a look at it when no one is around, just to feel the peace surrounding them. But now they are all alone and no one is there to help them get back home to their flat. Suddenly, a man shows up from the forest behind them. He speaks poor English even though he is an English teacher. Suzanne starts chatting with him and within some time a car arrives to pick them up.
