13% of South Africa is useable for farming, and that’s not very much, it’s because the land is to dry. Plant got troubles with growing, in the heat. The farmers are using machines for watering. South Africa farming is known from sunflowers and sugar.

Ostriches

The ostriches industry started around 1870 in Karoo, close to Cape Town. The conditions there isn’t good for normal farming. But the conditions is very good for ostriches. They can eat the small bushes and stuff like that. There’s about 500.000 ostriches in whole Karoo and that 85% of all ostriches in the entire world! If you want to hard-boil an ostrich egg, it would take you about 2 hours. The eggs are very strong, and it’s very hard to break them. Ostriches can’t fly, but if were to fly it would need a wingspan of 10 meters.

Fruit

Deciduous fruit is growing in the Cape Town area. This industry export of fruit, represents 12% of South Africa’s earnings of farming products.

Wine

Dutch and French settlers started the wine production in South Africa, by planting the first vineyards there in 1655. The Dutch commanders wanted the African farmers to start a wine production, in the start they wasn’t interested in doing that, but then a new commander came! And he was a specialist in wine, he started the production near Cape Town. And soon after the farmers started their own vineyards. Now the black vineyard workers are doing their best for making the perfect vine.
