In 1910 the bore republics and the British areas were formed into the Union of South Africa. The Black people had no influence, only the White ones could be elected to the parliament. The whites made some laws that would make the life for the blacks very difficult.
For example; Blacks were not allowed to go on strikes, they were not allowed to apply for skilled jobs and the blacks had to carry identity papers with them all the time.
In 1912 some blacks formed the South African national congress (ANC). Unfortunately the conditions went from bad to worse. In 1913 the White government had decided that the blacks (70% of the population) could only have 7,5% of the country's land to live on. And they were not allowed to rent or buy some of the whites land. (remaining 92,5%)
In 1948 the National party won the election. South Africa was introduced to apartheid. It means Being apart. The idea was that every race has it's own identity. Many Blacks were sent away to different parts of South Africa. Families were ripped apart. Men who already had a job stayed while their wife and children were sent away. So many families hardly ever saw each other again.
