This is an English short story written in 1997 by Elizabeth Russell Taylor.
It is set on the countryside in England in present time where washing machines are standard. The characters live in a house with a garden in which they grow their vegetables. I imagine they are surrounded by fields with horses and grain.
The narrator, Annie, is a smart little girl. I think she is around ten years old due to the fact that she is playing with the theatre, but when her mother leaves her she does not understand it completely. She takes the responsibility and thinks that her mothers disappearing is something she had put into her head. Annie is very fond of her mother (p.1.ll.27-28.) unlike her father. Annie and her father has bad relationship, they do not talk with each other. For Annie he is the grumpy and boring father who does not care about her, the only think he care of is his study. Annie misses her fathers love.
She loves to visit her uncle Hugo. When she is over there she can do all the things she cannot do at home (p.2.ll.38-41, 45-46.). Hugo gives her the attention she does not get from her father. She can feel that Hugo is very fond of her mother, that is a feeling she do not get at home due to her father does not like her mother.
