The short story “Kiss” is about how people handle difficult situations, and how their past influences their decisions. The story expresses to the reader, how to overcome hardships, and asking for assistance always helps. In this essay, there will be an analysis of the characters. There are three main characters, that are almost equally important. There will also be a focus on composition, themes, and messages.
The story does not tell any of their names; therefore, I will refer to them as the woman, the man with the dreadlocks, and the man with the backpack. The young man with the dreadlocks and the woman is together, the last man with a backpack is strange to them. The first main character there will focus on is the young woman. Through the start of the story, the story has many small references to how she looks like. The woman is “Young” (l. 10), she's wearing a “silver jacket” and green sneaker (l. 10) and has “blond hair in a ponytail” (l. 4) and “pale” skin (l. 21). The inner characterization of the young women has mainly presented through flashbacks in the story. Her status in the society is middle to upper class, as the text also says, she could be seen as “privileged” (l. 22). She does also have “solicitor parents” (l. 32) which also means they are in the middle to the upper class. Halfway through the story, the story says, “felt unloved by her mother” (l. 48-50) and “was sexually abused by her father” (l. 36-40). This has a negative consequence on her development. It made her not willing to interact with classmates, and which the ice-cold relation with her mother, the young woman feels alone.
